The magnificent Duomo in beautiful Florence.
According to Episcopal tradition (i.e. presided over by a Bishop), a city (i.e. metropolitan area) may have many churches but it usually has only one Cathedral and correspondingly one patron saint (the latter is mostly an Orthodox/Catholic tradition). The Bishop is supposed to be a representative of the 12 apostles of Christ and loosely speaking, the Bishop reports to a Patriarch - like the The Pope.
