Andalusia, Spain
Andalusia, Spain is the southernmost of the nineteen autonomies of Spain. Its cities are nestled among mountains like the Sierra Nevada, the second tallest mountain range in Europe, and vast open plains. During our travels, we visited Córdoba, Seville, and Granada.
Each of the cities presented their unique charm. Common between all, though, was the contrast between the Moorish old towns and the new city. Old arches, tiling, and cobbled paths would have turns into bustling streets with storefronts, office buildings, neon lights, nightlife, and more---aside from the burning heat.
We mainly traveled between town to town via a rental car. We saw small villages only linked to others by one highway, windmills as tall as the hills they sat on, the Mediterranean coastline, and more.
The Iberian peninsula has experienced countless invasions over its history. It's difficult to number all of the groups, languages, and cultures that have left their mark on Spain; nonetheless, Andalusia is an incredible representation of it. Expulsion of the non-Christians during the Reconquista did not remove the Jewish quarters and Muslim palaces. In examining the history of Andalusia through our journey, we find similarities with South Asia and the confluence of its countless cultures.
